NHKラジオビジネス英語の２０２３年（令和５年）９月２２日の放送で、スリランカ出身のジャーナリスト、スベンドリニ・カクチさんのインタビューが放送されました。そこで、英語学習の重要なことが話されていたので、紹介します。
Shibarata: Finally, you've witten so many articles in English. What advice would you give to our listeners on how to learn English or regional language?
Suvendrini Kakuchi: I usually say to my children, as well, is to be able to lisnten. Listening is the most important thing when you learn a new language. And you know, I, as a child, spoke three languages because in Sri Lanka, we have three official languages. (That's right.) And I couldn't even read and write at that time, you know, but I learned all through listening. So, to be able to listen and ..... I kown in Japan, it's kind of difficult to hear different languages all the time. So how about listening to English tapes a lot, you know, all the time? Just put your earphones on when you wash the dishes or when you're in the train --- not read, so much, but to listen. Because I think the ear is very important.
So listening is, I think..... I would suggest as one very important way of learning another language.（訳）
柴田：最後に、カクチさんは英語で数多くの記事を執筆してこられましたが、英語や地方言語の学び方について、リスナーの皆さんにどのようなアドバイスをなさいますか？スベンドリーニ・カクチ：普段、私の子どもたちにも言っているのは、聞けるようになることです。リスニングは、新しい言語を学ぶときに最も重要なことです。ご存じのとおり、私は幼いころ、３つの言語を話しました。スリランカには公用語が３つあるからです。（そうですね。）当時、読み書きすらできませんでしたが、すべてをリスニングから学びました。
聞けるようになること・・・、日本では絶えず別の言語を耳にすることは、ちょっと難しいとわかっています。それなら、英語のテープを何度も、四六時中聞くというのはどうでしょう。食器を洗うときや電車に乗っているときにとにかくイヤホンをつけて、読むのではなく、むしろ聞くです。聞く力は大変重要だと思うからです。
ですから、別の言語と学ぶ非常に重要な方法の一つとして、私はリスニングを提案したいと思います。
以前にも書きましたが、私も英語学習においては、「聞く」ということが非常に重要だと経験上、感じてきました。外国の方からも同じような意見が出されると、うれしくなります。
